Focus creates reality – this premise is the foundation of everything we experience in life.
And it’s not understood by many.
We create everything – the things we want and the things we don’t want – through the decisions we make and the focus we hold – consciously or unconsciously.
You may think you’re focused on creating that amazing new job opportunity. But if part of you is still focused on your imposter syndrome, it’s unlikely to happen.
Psychology describes a phenomenon called inattentional blindness or selective attention. Most of you probably know the famous “Invisible Gorilla” experiment?
Our brains can’t fully process everything at once. So attention acts as a filter: we perceive best what we concentrate on, while other things go unnoticed. You don’t see what you’re not focused on – even if it’s a gorilla walking through the picture (whilst you focus on counting ball passes).
So you basically see what you expect to see. And that expectation is shaped by your conscious – or unconscious – focus.
That has a massive impact: When your focus is on your limiting beliefs – fear, scarcity, doubt – your mind keeps scanning the world for confirmation of those. And it will find what it is looking for: obstacles, rejection, lack. The more you pay attention to them, the more real they become. You end up recreating what you most want to avoid.
The opposite is true too: When you shift your attention on what you truly love to create, your energy changes and your perception expands in that direction. You will see new opportunities that would otherwise remain unnoticed. Supportive people and meaningful “coincidences” start to “appear”.
The truth is: we are all creators. Not through force, but through focus.
Being aware of your focus – and able to redirect it – is the key to consciously shaping your life, as focus creates reality.
